PROTECT Co-Director and Human Subjects Core leader Jose F. Cordero recently gave an invited talk to the trainees at the annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Reproduction hosted in Grand Rapids, MI.

This talk, entitled “Risk Factors for Preterm Births in Puerto Rico: From Health Disparities to Endocrine Disruptors,” was sponsored by the SSR Diversity Committee, which provides mentoring, resources and communication to SSR members who self-identify as underrepresented, including those from underrepresented populations and individuals with disabilities.

In his talk, Dr. Cordero covered the events related to endocrine disruptors from the 1950s, when the original clinical trials for the contraceptive pill were conducted in Puerto Rico, to the high rate of Premature Thelarche (breast enlargement in girls less than 8 years of age), to the current high rate of preterm births.
