Mary Penny, a Civil Engineering undergraduate at Northeastern University, and one of our PROTECT trainees, is starting a co-op opportunity with Environmental Partners Group, Inc. in Quincy, MA where she will conduct field testing for a drinking water supply.
Mary has been working for Project 5 under the supervision of post-doctoral associate Lily Rajic and Prof. Akram Alshawabkeh. As part of her experience, she conducted research to understand and improve solar-powered remediation of groundwater. Mary planed and performed laboratory experiments, including testing the performance of different electrode materials for degradation of trichloroethylene.
Together with a fellow PROTECT trainee and PhD candidate, Noushin Fallahpour, Mary presented the Project 5 goals and achievements at the SustaiNUbility, a Northeastern University event held in November of 2013, which featured exhibits from interdisciplinary research teams working across the university.
Environmental Partners Group, Inc. provides civil and environmental engineering services to a broad client base. Mary’s work with the company began this January as part of the Northeastern University co-op program, and will continue until the end of June, 2014. When asked about her recent experiences, Mary replied, “I learned so much and it definitely opened my eyes to the research field. My current co-op is sending me out to central Massachusetts for the next month to do water testing on a drinking water supply, which I definitely owe to my research at PROTECT!”
After finishing her co-op Mary is excited to continue work with the Project 5 research team again!
