The Trials and Tribulations of Superfund’s Early Years

Craig E. Colten, Professor of Geography at Louisiana State University

Professor Colten is the Carl O. Sauer Professor of Geography at Louisiana State University and his work generally fits into the fields of environmental history and hazards geography. He began his career directing a research team investigating historical hazardous wastes for the State of Illinois and spent two of years in the Washington, DC area working in litigation-related research on Superfund cases. During that time and in the subsequent years, he worked on cases involving dozens of CERCLA sites and provided expert testimony on over 20 cases. In recent years he has researched and written about the historical dimensions of industrial pollution in the American South, environmental justice, and community resilience. He is the author of the award winning An Unnatural Metropolis: Wresting New Orleans from Nature (2005), the recent Perilous Place Powerful Storms: Hurricane Protection in Coastal Louisiana (2009), and currently edits the Geographical Review.
